Some organizations dread the August recess and other district work periods because legislators are off the Hill and presumably focused on concerns specific to their district.

These are prime times, however, to engage members of Congress. Because they aren’t working on the Hill, their schedules are generally not constrained by time-sensitive tasks and meetings. They have fewer emails to wade through and usually have time set aside to meet with their constituents at home, making district work periods ideal for advocates to personally express their concerns. And it goes without saying that face-to-face conversations make more of an impact!
